Batavia: from the author of The Opera House, Ned Kelly and Mutiny on the Bounty By Peter Fitzsimons

4 stars as it is very hard to read as the descriptions are graphic and the times were savage and hard it is not a book to love. However, I thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt a lot about the wreck and the lives of the crew and passengers. I have seen the replica of the Peter Fitzsimons I had no knowledge of the story of the Bratavia. If it had not been supported by documentary and other evidence, the truth of this account would be hard to accept. It is a gobsmacking read very well told. Peter Fitzsimons An intriguing, illuminating and fascinating read. I couldn't put the book down until I had finished it. The non fiction equivalent to Lord of the Flies and then some. I'm surprised there are not many books published regarding the Batavia. I've read Mike Dash's 'Batavia's Peter Fitzsimons Had never heard of the story of the Batavia until a friend mentioned it in passing. He particularly recommended this book and I have to say it is a fantastic read. Very well researched and extremely well written. There are very few books I have literally been unable to put Peter Fitzsimons I was given this fine book by my Aussie in laws as a Christmas present thank you Mum and Dad, I'm grateful. This is a well written and highly readable account of a very gruesome incident in Australia's early colonial period (as opposed to the thousands of years Peter Fitzsimons

Despite the overtones of 'Lord of the Flies', the real force of this book is that it all actually happened (allowing for some guessing as to the conversations that might have taken place. A salutary lesson of the evil of smooth talking con men and of unrestrained Peter Fitzsimons Having spent a day on the Abrolhos Islands I wanted to read this most terrible story. I could only tackle it in small chunks as its effect was so profound. It is a beautifully written and most carefully researched piece of work which should be read only if you have a strong Peter Fitzsimons Amazing. I read it in one go, unable to put it down. Now reading it again, to get the details I missed. Peter Fitzsimons Fascinating story with many twists and turns. Well researched and well explained, though some parts of the story are a only probable recreation. Not for the faint hearted though: many, many people are killed during the book. Peter Fitzsimons Good book, bought it for the library at my work. Peter Fitzsimons
