Also the English language translations of every song by Sunjoy Shekhar, were of Excellent nature.
Hardcover Amazing. Fell in love with the legend once again. Hardcover It's one copy to have in your shelf! You will be proud of owning it. Gulzar has penned the finest songs of Bollywood, to read them and hum along is a beautiful feeling. The translations are very close to the original text. Par gulzar toh gulzar hain.. You read him, and you lose yourself to his imagery and the environment he creates. Hardcover
This is one particular book I’m proud to have in my collection !!
Firstly, the cover of the book, its binding and the feel of the book mesmerizes you..!! I don’t know if this can happen with everyone or not, but everytime I pick up this particular book to read, I can feel Gulzar ji’s presence near me..!!
Another book by Gulzar ji, this time translations made by Sujoy Shekhar. As the name itself indicates, this book is a collection of 100 lyrics by Gulzar ji, some very famous while some not so famous, but still magical. The 100 lyrics are selected by Gulzar ji himself. In the forenote, he explains how the idea f this book culminated. The book was published coinciding with Gulzar ji’s 75th birthday.
There is no particular grouping or sectioning made but the book is divided in parts. And at the strt of each part, Gulzar ji shares a fact or two about the lyrics that are to follow. The book also contains some personal photographs of Gulzar ji at work, lyrics written in Urdu in his handwriting, a painting or two by him. The book starts with the classical “Mora gora ang lai le” from the film Bandini. As you go on turning the pages, you come across many familiar songs, and in between a few unfamiliar ones peep in, but you go on enjoying the flow. Index of the first lines and also album wise index is given at the end of the book. The book contains lyrics from total 59 albums out of which 5 are non filmi ones. Songs like Chaiyya Chaiyya, Kajara re are included, as well as songs like Tum aa gaye ho, Ek akela is sheher mein too are included. There is one song from unreleased movie Libaas, there are a song or two from Anurag Kashyap’s film No Smoking, one who a few may have heard of.
The format is the same. Original lyrics in Hindi (Devnagri script) are on the left side, while translations on the left. The print and the font are very nice and the paper quality and the print quality too are appreciative. All in all, a perfect book for Gulzar ji’s fans and also a must have book for every book lover !! (That’s my personal opinion though) Hope my review tempts many to buy the book ;)
And couldn’t stop myself from mentioning this.. The book ends with a photo of Gulzar ji with his dog and two lines written followed by his autograph. The lines say –
“For Pali of Pali Hill –
He was with me till the end of this book.
When I finished the last page and mailed it, he breathed his last.”
P.S. – Very special thanks to Aman ji, for asking review of this particular book, because of you I read the book once again and enjoyed it.. !!!
Hardcover Nice revisit of memory lane. A good collection and a great translation Hardcover
